The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) relied on its servers to run essential applications, making regular and reliable backups an important part of its IT infrastructure. The requirement also extended to maintaining offsite backups so that critical data could remain protected in the event of an emergency.

The project covered server and storage setup, automated backups, client PC data protection, and restore testing. The backup environment was designed to provide a practical way of protecting important data and recovering it when required.

The Aga Khan Development Network needed a dependable backup setup for the servers supporting its essential applications. Regular backups were required to reduce the risk of data loss, while an offsite backup capability was needed to provide additional protection in case of an emergency or major system failure.

The backup process also needed to cover client PC data and provide a reliable way to verify that backed-up information could actually be restored when needed.

HP x1400 and HP StoreEasy 1630 storage systems were installed and configured to provide the required storage capacity. RAID groups and shared folders were set up with appropriate access permissions.

Symantec Backup Exec 2012 was configured for automated server backups and tape storage, while Symantec DLO was deployed to handle scheduled backups of client PC data.

Restore testing was also carried out to verify that backed-up data could be recovered successfully when required.
